The Egyptian-German Cultural Center (ÄDK)
Language as culture. Culture as language.

The Egyptian-German Cultural Center (ÄDK), located in Cairo, is an institute for language and culture, aiming at the dissemination of the German language and culture in Egypt. As a partner of the Goethe-Institut Egypt it is officially accredited with the Goethe-Institut as well as the Austrian language diploma German (ÖSD).

The head of the ÄDK is German studies expert, cultural mediator, freelance writer and translator Prof. Dr. Tarik A. Bary. In 1998 Bary established the ÄDK as the Egyptian contribution to the intensification of exchange between Arabic and German speaking cultures under the slogan „cultural exchange is not a one-way road, and should be based on mutual terms“.

At the top of ÄDK’s efforts stands translation work. Bary who has been working as a literal and specialist translator for more than 30 years set up a department within the ÄDK, focusing exclusively on the fields of technical translation and lexicography.
The ÄDK sees the work of lexicography and translation primarily as intercultural process, aiming at the exchange and mutual understanding between Arabian and German-speaking countries.

Dr. El-Gendi, Abdel-Kader
The crucial element of the translator’s work, as someone facilitating the cultural transfer, is the focus on the results and the outcomes derived from his efforts. As a professional translator for Arabterm, I help to build a bridge between the German and Arabic culture. Our goal is to contribute to the specialized lexicographic work, in order to enrich, and somehow preserve, the Arabic language, creating a sort of mutual scientific integration and cultural exchange.

My job of technical translator provides me with the opportunity to become a cultural mediator, too. In fact, by working on every little word, not only I help building a bridge from the German to the Arab culture, but I also participate in developing a unified specialized lexicon in Arabic. I am proud of that.
